Cubital Tunnel Release
and Ulnar Nerve Transfer

What is Cubital Tunnel Release and Ulnar Nerve Transfer?

Cubital tunnel release and ulnar nerve transfer are surgical procedures designed to relieve pressure on the ulnar nerve, which runs along the inner side of the elbow. Compression of this nerve can cause numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the hand and fingers—a condition known as cubital tunnel syndrome.

By releasing the nerve from compression or transferring it to a new position, these procedures restore normal nerve function and prevent long-term damage.

Benefits of Cubital Tunnel Release and Ulnar Nerve Transfer

  • Eliminates numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and fingers.
  • Restores grip strength and fine motor control.
  • Minimally invasive options available, leading to smaller incisions and faster recovery.
  • Prevents permanent nerve damage and muscle weakness.
  • Improves overall hand function, allowing patients to perform daily activities with ease.

Who is a Candidate?

Cubital tunnel release and ulnar nerve transfer may be recommended for patients who:

  • Experience numbness or tingling in the ring and pinky fingers, especially at night.
  • Have hand weakness or difficulty gripping objects.
  • Feel persistent pain on the inner elbow.
Have not found relief with splinting, therapy, or medications.

How the Procedure Works

The approach depends on the severity of the nerve compression:

  1. Cubital Tunnel Release – The ligament compressing the ulnar nerve is cut, creating more space for the nerve to move freely.
  2. Ulnar Nerve Anterior Transposition – The nerve is relocated to a less compressed position.
  3. Minimally Invasive or Open Techniques – Both options are available, with smaller incisions leading to quicker recovery.

Recovery Expectations

  • Patients typically notice symptom relief within days to weeks.
  • Light activities resume within a few weeks, with full recovery in 3-6 months.
  • Physical therapy may be recommended to regain full strength and prevent stiffness.
  • Most patients experience lasting relief, preventing further nerve damage.
