Radiofrequency ablation

What is Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat energy to disrupt pain signals from the nerves, providing long-lasting relief for chronic back, neck, and joint pain. This treatment is commonly used for facet joint arthritis or injury, sacroiliac joint pain, and other conditions where nerves are transmitting pain signals to the brain.

By precisely targeting the problematic nerves with radiofrequency energy, RFA reduces pain and improves mobility without the need for surgery or long-term medication use.

Benefits of Radiofrequency Ablation

  • Long-lasting pain relief, typically lasting 6-12 months or more.
  • Minimally invasive with no downtime, allowing for a quick return to daily activities.
  • Targets pain at the source, reducing the need for medication.
  • Improves mobility and function, allowing patients to stay active.
  • Effective for chronic back, neck, and joint pain, especially after a successful medial branch nerve block.

Who is a Candidate?

Radiofrequency ablation may be recommended for patients who:

  • Experience chronic pain from facet joint arthritis or injury, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, or nerve-related pain.
  • Have found relief from a medial branch nerve block, confirming the affected joint as the pain source.
  • Need a non-surgical, long-term pain relief option.
  • Have not responded to medications, physical therapy, or other conservative treatments.

How the Procedure Works

RFA is performed under fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to ensure precise nerve targeting:

  1. A small probe is placed near the affected nerve.
  2. Radiofrequency energy is delivered, heating the nerve and disrupting its ability to send pain signals.
  3. The procedure takes about 30-45 minutes, and patients go home the same day.

Most patients begin experiencing pain relief within 1-2 weeks, with results lasting 6 months to over a year.

Recovery Expectations

  • Minimal recovery time, with most patients resuming normal activities within 24-48 hours.
  • Gradual pain relief, with maximum results seen in 1-2 weeks.
  • Long-term relief lasting 6-12 months, with some patients benefiting for years.
  • Physical therapy may be recommended to strengthen the affected area and improve mobility.
