Cervical Fusion

What is Cervical Fusion?

Cervical fusion is a surgical procedure designed to stabilize the neck (cervical spine) by permanently joining two or more vertebrae. This procedure is commonly performed to treat degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, spinal instability, or trauma-related injuries. By eliminating movement between the affected vertebrae, cervical fusion helps relieve pain, reduce nerve compression, and restore spinal stability.

Benefits of Cervical Fusion

  • Pain Relief – Alleviates chronic neck pain, nerve compression, and radiating arm pain.
  • Improved Stability – Prevents excessive motion between vertebrae due to degenerative and traumatic conditions.
  • Nerve Decompression – Relieves pressure on spinal nerves, reducing numbness, tingling, weakness, and radiating arm pain.
  • Long-Term Solution – Provides lasting relief from degenerative spinal conditions.

Who is a Candidate?

Cervical fusion may be ideal for patients who:

  • Experience chronic neck pain due to herniated or degenerative discs.
  • Have nerve compression causing pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the arms.
  • Have spinal instability from trauma or degenerative conditions.
  • Have not found relief with non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy or injections.

How the Procedure Works

During the surgery, the damaged intervertebral disc is removed, and a bone graft or implant is placed between the vertebrae to facilitate fusion. Titanium plates and screws may be used for additional stabilization. Over time, the vertebrae fuse together into a solid bone, eliminating movement and preventing further damage. This procedure can be performed using a minimally invasive approach, reducing recovery time.

Recovery Expectations

Patients typically wear a neck brace for a short period after surgery and may experience initial stiffness and soreness. Most individuals can return to light activities within a few weeks and resume normal activities in 6-12 weeks, depending on healing progress. Physical therapy may be recommended to restore mobility and strength.
