What is Lumbar Fusion?

Lumbar fusion is a surgical procedure designed to stabilize the lower back (lumbar spine) by permanently fusing two or more vertebrae. It is commonly performed to treat chronic lower back pain, degenerative disc disease, spinal instability, spondylolisthesis, and herniated discs. By eliminating motion between the vertebrae, lumbar fusion helps reduce pain, prevent nerve compression, and restore spinal stability.

How the Procedure Works

During lumbar fusion, the damaged intervertebral disc is removed, and a bone graft or implant is placed between the vertebrae to facilitate fusion. Titanium plates, rods, or screws may be used to secure the vertebrae and promote stability. Over time, the bones fuse together into a solid unit, preventing further movement and pain.

Minimally invasive techniques are often used to reduce recovery time, decrease post-operative pain, and minimize tissue damage.
