Microdiscectomy

What is Microdiscectomy?

Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive spine surgery designed to remove a herniated or damaged disc that is compressing the spinal nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness. This procedure is commonly performed to treat sciatica, lumbar disc herniation, and nerve compression syndromes. By relieving pressure on the affected nerve, microdiscectomy helps restore function, reduce pain, and improve mobility with a faster recovery time than traditional open spine surgery.

Benefits of Microdiscectomy

  • Minimally invasive approach results in smaller incisions and less tissue damage.
  • Immediate relief of leg pain, numbness, and weakness caused by nerve compression.
  • Faster recovery time compared to traditional open surgery.
  • Lower risk of complications, less blood loss, and reduced post-operative pain.
  • Many patients return to daily activities within a few weeks.

Who is a Candidate?

Microdiscectomy may be ideal for patients who:

  • Have a herniated lumbar disc causing nerve compression and radiating leg pain (sciatica).
  • Experience numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the legs due to a pinched nerve.
  • Have failed to find relief with non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or injections.
  • Need a minimally invasive option for removing the damaged portion of a spinal disc.

How the Procedure Works

Microdiscectomy is performed using a small incision (about 1 inch) in the lower back. The surgeon:

  1. Utilizes a small surgical microscope to visualize the affected nerve and disc.
  2. Removes the herniated portion of the disc, relieving pressure on the nerve.
  3. Preserves surrounding structures to maintain spinal stability.
  4. Closes the incision with minimal scarring, allowing for a faster recovery.

The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, and most patients return home the same day.

Recovery Expectations

  • Patients usually feel immediate relief from leg pain and nerve symptoms.
  • Light activities can resume within 1-2 weeks, with a gradual return to normal function.
  • Strenuous activities, bending, and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.
  • Physical therapy may be recommended to strengthen core muscles and support spinal health.

Hear From Our Experts

“Microdiscectomy is a game-changer for those suffering from sciatic pain. By relieving nerve pressure with a minimally invasive approach, we help patients get back to moving comfortably, living pain-free, and enjoying life again—often within just a few weeks.”– Dr. Jason Billinghurst
