What is Cervical Fusion?

Cervical fusion is a surgical procedure designed to stabilize the neck (cervical spine) by permanently joining two or more vertebrae. This procedure is commonly performed to treat degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, spinal instability, or trauma-related injuries. By eliminating movement between the affected vertebrae, cervical fusion helps relieve pain, reduce nerve compression, and restore spinal stability.

Titanium plates and screws may be used for additional stabilization. Over time, the vertebrae fuse together into a solid bone, eliminating movement and preventing further damage. This procedure can be performed using a minimally invasive approach, reducing recovery time.

Recovery Expectations

Patients typically wear a neck brace for a short period after surgery and may experience initial stiffness and soreness. Most individuals can return to light activities within a few weeks and resume normal activities in 6-12 weeks, depending on healing progress. Physical therapy may be recommended to restore mobility and strength.
