Post-Op Instructions

Following your post-operative instructions is essential to ensure a smooth recovery, minimize complications, and achieve the best possible outcome.

If you are having day surgery, follow these guidelines for a smoother experience:

• Transportation: Arrange for someone to drive you home, as you will not be able to drive for at least 24 hours post-surgery.

• Travel Safety: Avoid eating or drinking in the car on the way home to prevent nausea or vomiting caused by anesthesia and motion.

• Diet: Wait until you feel hungry to eat after surgery. Start with light, non-greasy meals for the first 24 hours.

• Post-Surgical Care: If surgery involves an extremity (e.g., leg, knee, hand, or elbow), keep it elevated and use ice as directed to reduce swelling and pain.

• Pain Management: Take pain medication as prescribed and start it as discomfort begins, rather than waiting for severe pain to set in. Managing pain early will make it easier to control.

Recovery After Surgery

The length of your hospitalization and recovery period will vary based on factors such as the type of surgical procedure, the surgical approach used, the size of the incision, and the presence of any complications. Your return to work or normal activities will depend on the nature of your job or the physical demands of your daily routine. Your care team will provide personalized guidance to help you navigate your recovery and resume your life safely.
