Trigger Finger Release

What is Trigger Finger Release?

Trigger finger release is a minimally invasive procedure designed to treat trigger finger (stenosing tenosynovitis), a condition where a finger or thumb gets stuck in a bent position and locks or clicks when straightened. This occurs due to inflammation and thickening of the tendon sheath, restricting normal movement.

By releasing the affected tendon sheath, this procedure restores smooth, pain-free movement of the finger or thumb.

Benefits of Trigger Finger Release

  • Eliminates pain, stiffness, and locking of the affected finger.
  • Restores full range of motion, allowing for normal hand function.
  • Minimally invasive with small incisions and minimal downtime.
  • Prevents long-term tendon damage and loss of dexterity.
  • Quick procedure with lasting relief, often performed in under 15 minutes.

Who is a Candidate?

Trigger finger release may be recommended for patients who:

  • Experience finger stiffness, pain, or locking that worsens over time.
  • Have difficulty fully bending or straightening a finger or thumb.
  • Feel a clicking or snapping sensation when moving the finger.
  • Have not found relief with splinting, steroid injections, or other non-surgical treatments.

How the Procedure Works

Trigger finger release is performed under local anesthesia using one of two techniques:

  1. Open Release: A small incision is made in the palm, and the tightened tendon sheath is carefully released.
  2. Percutaneous Release: A needle is used to loosen the tendon sheath without an incision.

Both techniques restore smooth movement and allow patients to regain full function quickly.

Recovery Expectations

  • Most patients can move their fingers immediately after surgery.
  • Light activities can resume within days, with full recovery in a few weeks.
  • Physical therapy may be recommended to strengthen grip and prevent stiffness.
  • Pain relief and improved motion are often immediate.
